cannot be put to rest…
Despair, dissatisfaction, anxiety, depression and emptiness can hinder your personal and professional life. These internal struggles may drive you to seek help. The first step is a comprehensive assessment of your problems to understand what’s going on. During our initial meeting, I want to hear from you about what brings you to treatment. After this initial consultation, we may decide to work together using:
- Psychotherapy (talk therapy),
- Psychoanalysis (a type of intensive psychotherapy),
- Psychopharmacology (medication) or,
- A combination of all three.
Whichever treatment we decide to pursue, we will work together to reduce the distressing symptoms that brings you to treatment. The insight, understanding, and perspectives that you gain through therapy can be invaluable to your sense of personal autonomy and fulfillment.
SPECIALTIES
I am a board-certified psychiatrist who practices psychiatry, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis. Although in today’s world, it is less common for psychiatrists to practice psychotherapy, an approach that combines psychotherapy and medication can provide more help than using each treatment alone. I am currently a psychoanalytic candidate at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute, and I am a clinical faculty member at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where I teach and supervise psychiatry residents. Additionally, I have extensive experience with patients with eating disorders and have served as Medical Director of the Adult Inpatient Eating Disorders Program at Rogers Behavioral Health.
SERVICES
I provide psychotherapy, psychoanalysis and medication management to adults and mature adolescents (16+). I work best with patients who are looking for relief of distressing symptoms and increased self-understanding and peace in their lives. Treatments I use include:
Psychotherapy
Psychoanalytic or psychodynamic psychotherapy applies psychoanalytic theory to psychotherapy, focusing both on reducing distressing symptoms and also on increasing self-understanding. In therapy, I may guide you to explore thoughts, feelings, and conflicts that underlie long standing patterns of relating to yourself and others.
Therapy sessions occur once or twice a week
Psychoanalysis
Psychoanalytic treatment is rooted in the belief that individuals frequently act on unrecognized desires and wishes that originate in their unconscious mind, and is often a good treatment choice for people who are feeling stuck or dissatisfied in their lives, despite extensive previous treatments. I help you to identify these unrecognized feelings by listening to your feelings, thoughts, fantasies, dreams, and patterns of relating to yourself and others. Often, I can provide a different perspective that friends and relatives might not see. My expertise lies in identifying behaviors and patterns that obstruct your path to emotional freedom and guiding you toward lasting changes and recovery from past traumas.
Psychoanalysis is an intensive therapy that requires sessions several times a week and open communication.
NOTE: I do not treat patients with active addictions or offer disability, forensic or custody evaluations. I am not trained in couples or family therapy.
